VocabularySpellingCity comes with more than 42,000 preprogrammed words in its database. When you create a word list, this spelling software identifies the words from the database, matching it with an audio recording of the word and its definition. The program also comes with 26 spelling games, activities and tests that both adults and children can enjoy. The teaching resources for this software include printable worksheets, Dolch-Sight Word Lists, articles about related topics and more. For these reasons and more, VocabularySpellingCity is our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner.
The VocabularySpellingCity games are targeted toward a younger age group, but adults can still find the activities challenging and entertaining. The interface for this online spelling software is a little complex because of all the options, so younger children may need help navigating the site and playing some of the games.
This online spelling software enables you to add your own vocabulary words. You can type them in manually or paste them in. Unfortunately, you can't upload a file. However, pasting your list in is easy as long as the words are separated by commas or on separate lines. VocabularySpellingCity identifies misspelled words as you add them. It will also ask you to verify the word if it doesn't recognize it.
When you add spelling words to VocabularySpellingCity, this spelling software notes whether you use capital or lowercase letters. If you originally enter the words using an initial capital letter, it will expect you to use a capital letter when you take the test. Otherwise, it will mark the word as spelled incorrectly.
Once you add the words, VocabularySpellingCity displays the words as well as definitions for each word and even sentences that use the word. You can select the definition and sentence from the supplied list or you can add your own. We liked this feature because of the flexibility it gives you.
VocabularySpellingCity provides a vocabulary test and a spelling test, two exercises, six vocabulary exercises, four writing activities, seven spelling activities and four miscellaneous exercises and games. Twelve of these are exclusively for customers with a premium membership. Although these exercises are effective at teaching words, we would have liked this spelling software to prompt you to retype the word correctly when you misspell it to help you remember the correct spelling better.
VocabularySpellingCity is software as a service, which means that you access it online instead of downloading it to your computer. In order to use this application, you'll need an internet connection. Having it accessible online from any computer makes it some of the most convenient spelling software available.
This spelling software provides you with many resources, including lists of words such as Dolch-Sight Words, phonics word lists, holiday words and words that have multiple meanings. Once you select a list of words, whether from those that VocabularySpellingCity provides or one you've created yourself, you can convert many of the spelling activities and other exercises, games and tests into printable worksheets. However, in order to print the worksheets, you log in to the child account instead of the parent/teacher account. In addition to learning spelling on the VocabularySpellingCity website, you can also access worksheets for synonyms, syllables, parts of speech and more.
When you complete an assignment, you can see words you need to work on more. The spelling software report shows the percentage of the words you correctly identified as well as the words you misspelled. At the end of the test, you receive a certificate that shows the number of correct words, incorrect words and words you skipped. Although this software contains good progress reports, other spelling software we reviewed has more in-depth reporting options.
As a teacher or parent, you have a username and password. You can then add students to the spelling software, including usernames and passwords for each student. In the teacher or parent view, you can see which assignments the users have completed and the scores they received.
This spelling software as a service supplies you with training videos to help you understand each feature. The website also has a FAQs page and a user forum. If you have questions, you can email or call VocabularySpellingCity.
